You want to be making a lot of good saves. Not crashing a lot.
Its a robotron thing these days.

Only thing I have right now is the roost protection, and boots. The knee/shin doesn't fit.

Elbow and all that is not going to happen, you are right can't move freely with that stuff on.

Helmet,gloves,boots,knee pads that fit,not braces,light elbow pads.
Chest protector optional.Shud be above the waist and comfortable in all positions.we cut the bullshit bicept guards and shoulder pads off.
Unless you are in a Mad Max movie, then they are must haves.

The idea is to have maximum protection without giving up range of motion and reaction time, balance etc.

Its an athletic agility thing.

I agree with gasgasxc here to a point. You need to find the balance that you're happy with. That is different for everyone, I went with less then more and back down to less, and im now happy with my current setup. You are right that too much can be restrictive, my previous setup was like this.

I wear a EVS ballistic jersey. I love it. It does get a little warm in the summer. But its saved me more than once. I ride woods and single track and i find i hit my elbows more than anything. But i hate standard elbow pads
