18 ec300

Hi all
Has anybody removed the stator cover and starter on their 18 EC to check if water/dirt is getting in there. Had an older EC that had a vent hole in the bottom of the case which let water in, but can't see one on the new style cases.
Thanks
Darren

Ok, so looks like no one has removed Thier stator cover yet on the 18. Had a closer look and it looks like there is possibly a small vent at the bottom of the cover which could let water in when jet washing or riding in deep water leading to corrosion inside. Will order a new gasket and remove it next week to check. Will report what I find.

Hi all,
Took off the ignition cover and found a lot of moisture inside caused from water entering through a vent at the bottom of the cover, leading to some corrosion on the steel pick up sensor screws and also turned the starter grease into sludge. On the plus side all the starter mechanism is showing no wear so far, so cleaned every thing up ready for reassembly. What sort of grease is recommended for the starter gears?.on the old gasser used to spray the stator with wd40 to dispel all the moisture but read somewhere that it can cause the insulation on the windings to break down. If so what's the best stuff to use?
Thanks
Darren

taylor146 n others:

One of the first things did to my 05 300 de was to remove cover and install a small short piece of clear tubing in ignition cover drain. Silicon sealed it and this prevented water from getting in and still provided venting. On previous owned bikes I had the corrosion issues mentioned. During the 9 years of riding bike in wet conditions had zero issues! Don't know best but use spectro sx chain wax and preservative. Light spray then blow out excess if any with air. Still looked new inside when bike was sold! Hope this helps!

I wet modded mine to seal it up and added a vent and some oil for proper lubrication. I have never been a fan of muddy brown sludge as a lubricant.

Hi do you have any photos? Did you use a vent on the topside with some type of one way breather?

I posted some photos here somewhere, do a search, let me know if you can?t find them and I?ll have a dig through my phone. I just used a small 5mm threaded vacuum fitting. No need for a one way one. Nice high 180 bend in the hose back to the ground and no leaks.
