Need BMW help

My bike (96k1100) runs low of gas and starts missing even with lots of gas in the tank. I can hear the high pitched whine of the fuel pump cavitating when this occures. I changed the fuel filter in the tank but that didn't help. The bike had not been ridden for some time prior to this problem starting up. Total milage: 37,000

I know nothing about a 96 beemer, but how about the tank vent?

You probably know this already but when you hear that whining pump, pull over and open the tank. If it sucks air you probably have a plugged vent.

Other long shot brainstorms...

Pinched line in the tank, but being unfamiliar with the layout of the BMW tank I don't know if that is even a plausible theory.

Maybe the impeller/diaphragm/whatever in the fuel pump deteriorated/cracked/got brittle while sitting for too long? Was there fuel in the pump during storage?

My neighbor has that exact bike with similar milage, I'll ask him if its a known issue that comes up. We recently got rid of the charcoal canister on his bike. Pull and cap the small manifold bleeds and the larger ones ore the vents. Just pulling the larger hoses from the cannister should make it easy to check for proper venting.
