2 stroke lingo and troubshoot
Hey guys and gals! My name is Jarrod and I am just now getting into the 2 stroke world.
I work as a mechanic on 4 strokes and basic maintenance items on 2 strokes. I just picked up a 2001 GG XC 250 (was told it was an EC... oh well). Clutch plates were stuck so I got it for a steal. Removed and soaked the plates and she runs and rides now. 1 or 2 kick bike with what I can tell is oem stuff. FMF Gnarly header with turbine core 2 silencer. All seems good except for the infuriating searching idle, hanging idle and occasional low idle and stall when coming to a stop. From searching this site and putting together what I could, I also think I experience "blubbering" in the 1/8 range. The bike sounds stuttery, lacking in power and then hits the pipe pretty abruptly and away I go. Kind of sketchy and unpredictable. I am looking for any guidance on smoothing the idle and taming the hit. If there is a JD kit or something. I do not know much about this as it stands. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Look forward to learning this new world. Current set up: *Carb cleaned thoroughly *Assume factory pilot and main ( i meant to check when I had it apart - looks like main is crimped in place though???) *I have adjusted the air screw from 1 out to 3 turns with erratic results. *No air leaks from boots or carb (sprayed carb cleaner around it) |
Crank seal going bad, probably on the mag side. It's an easy, inexpensive fix.

Leak down test, seal the carb and pipe manifolds, find a screw in shrader valve for the plug, pump up to 10psi if it holds for a minute it's not an air leak. If it doesn't, spray soap and water mix at every rubber/paper part, you will need to drain the oil and water and remove rhs clutch cover, the Lhs ignition cover and magneto, do a 5 psi vacuum test as well.
