I am looking to add a frequently asked questions section to the website to save space and time.... I will have it partitioned into categories that correspond to the categories in the forum here - engine, electrical, chassis, etc.

What do you think should be in the engine FAQ?

Questions about top end rebuilds, powervalves and clutches would be good.

Jeff, be sure to put an "oil" one in there...with a link to a BIG blank page that says nothing but "DON'T GO THERE" :D

Yah. Maybe I should just have a "religious beliefs" section where I can put 2 stroke oils, mixture ratios, chain lube and jetting! :D

Questions:

There's a vent line on the front left side of my engine. What's it for and where should it go?

What is the difference between the XC/DE flywheel and EC flywheel?
Does the XC/DE flywheel with a 10oz or 14oz weight equal the EC flywheel?

Answers:
The effect of the flywheel is more than just mass. It is dependent upon the radius about which this mass rotates. This property is called the "moment of inertia" or MOI. This property applies to all rotating objects like wheels, brake rotors, and all rotating engine components (crankshaft, pistons, rods, clutch basket, etc.), not just the flywheel.

Assuming only the effect of the flywheel MOI (no other engine components), the following can help explain some differences between the XC/DE and EC flywheels.

Compared to the MOI for EC flywheel:
MOI for XC/DE flywheel is approx. 30% of EC flywheel.
MOI for XC/DE flywheel (with 10 oz weight) is approx. 46% of EC flywheel.
MOI for XC/DE flywheel (with 14 oz weight) is approx. 63% of EC flywheel.

Therefore, the XC/DE flywheel will have a much different effect on the power distribution compared to the EC flywheel. The power distribution for the XC/DE flywheel will be snappier like a MX bike. By adding a flywheel weight (10 oz. or 14 oz.), the engine will build its power slower than before. However, only the EC flywheel have the greatest effect on power characteristics. Note: the bike will still produce the same about of horsepower... just the manner in which the power builds is different.

I would love to see a dyno test for different bolt-ons. Take for instance they could do a baseline then add a LTR carb jetting kit, then a bigger power valve cover. Next they could get into the head modifications, and what ever else you can do to build up power. This way we can see what is the best bang for the buck and see how much power we can create. I remember seeing an article on a 65hp GasGas. It could be very cool to see pictures and charts.

Sound idea if you ask me. Be good to have a section of where to get some of the more obscure performance bits like forged pistons and some more places in the UK that deal with/specialise in GasGas engine work/parts/tuning etc.

So on that note, who *does* do forged pistons? Specifically for my ec250 'motard.
