Newb needs help to identify

Hey folks, I have been lurking here for a while, and need help to identify a bike.
Obviously it is a GG. Base of cyl. says 249.2cc. Sticker on swingarm says EC. It is a 6 spd. with Ohlins rear shock. I couldn't identify the fork, there were way too many stickers on it. It has the FMF Gnarly pipe. It has yellow plastics, and two small, round headlights which are side by side.
The owner has no idea what it is. He bought it on a whim, and thinks it looks like a RM250. He had new reed valves put in it, and says it is very fast. The pet cock leaks. He wants $1200. but I think cash would talk to him.
The serial number is UTREC259810970091. I would appreciate any, and all feedback.

guessing its an 02 250,are the forks upside down forks or conventional?someone probably put the yellow plastic on it as they are normally red, does it have a trap door on the kickstand side of the bike to get to the air cleaner? if so its a 2002 and newer, the older models had a single piece number plate which had to be removed to get to the filter,do the rims have a shoulder on them?for a few years they had rounded edges and helped deflect the mud,put up a pic if you can and we can identify it for sure

I'll have to take another look for a trapdoor, and which configuration the rims are. I'll also get a better look at the forks. They had so many stickers on them, I couldn't make anything of them. He has so much crap in his garage that it was hard to just get close enough to get the the ser. #. I will also try to get a few pics.
I was trying not to show too much interest, as he doesn't know what he has. He doesn't know what year, or anything.
Thanks for your reply.

I don't think you listed the VIN correctly. I think the GasGas bikes start with V and not U. Also, the EC259 should probably be EC250. In any case, I'm guessing this bike is an 2001 EC250 (most likely a XC250). The traits that Fury mentions like airbox door on left side also existed on the 2001. The bikes can with Ohlins rear shock and WP inverted forks (like on KTMs). You can tell if it has the heavy flywheel (EC) or lighter flywheel (XC) by looking at the exit location of the wire on the left side cover. If the wire exits in the 2 o'clock position then it is an EC250. If the wire exits in the 10 o'clock position, then it is an XC250. Can you get some pics of the bike? That would be easiest.

EDIT: here are 2 pics of my old bike with these items identified.

What would the engine case ID tell me? I think the wires exit at 2 o'clock, but I will double check. It's possible that I copied the serial # wrong.
The first time, I had the owner call it out to me. I referenced it against a post on here explaining how to interprit the ser. #. Some of it didn't make sense, so I went back, and wrote it down myself. His garage is chock full of boy toys, and dimly lit. There is not much room to move around, and it's hard to see in there.
I will try to get pictures, and look to ID the forks, and air cleaner access. I will also get the engine ID #.
Thanks for your help.
