I went for a short ride through the woods Sunday and almost ran over these Morels. I got of the bike and in about 5 minutes I had filled my shirt. Only problem was that I couldn't ride and hold my shirt so, I filled my helmet. Good thing I didn't crash on the way home..

I did some research myself after my noob question and curiosity got the best of me. mm delicious mushrooms! I sometimes stop to look at the schrooms too! Never been any good at identifying them.. There are too many dodgy looking toxic fungi here in Aus that unless if you know what you're doing odds are you'll end up eating a toadstool.

Let me know when you get a batch of these. :D

Then it could be a good day, a great day, the scariest day of your life, or the best! Possibly even all of them at the same time! :D

I ride with a guy who will stop to collect mushrooms.. in the fall he goes out on his 950 adv with the big alum side boxes. He got a lot of "chicken of the mountain"? which is apparently a really good one?? Had a chef from one of the high end restaurants buying them from him.. I just ride by.. I don't care for them and I know I'd pick the wrong one..

Sounds like a good ride on my dirt bike!

grunkster 04-18-2012 05:43 AM

mmmmmm morels!!! LOVE em'. I been looking around here but no luck yet.

mcnut 04-18-2012 06:08 AM

Frankfort must have had more rain than N. Manchester. It's too dry here. I'm afraid our 'shroom season is gonna be a bust.

I found about 20 small greys while arrowing my woods on March 30th. We've received only a 1/2" of rain since March 22nd. I went out for an hour or so last night and only found one pathetic, dried-up 'shroom.:(

We've had plenty of rain and I would think the crop was good around here, BUT I know nothing about finding them! A huge shame since I have 300 acres to hunt them on..... They are tasty, that I do know

mcnut 04-18-2012 12:26 PM

Yes. That is shameful.;)

Teach me Master, I am but a sponge for your knowledge :D
As it is I'm just a glass licker on many fronts....

It's almost like, you have to calibrate your eyes when you go looking for them. The first one is the hardest to spot but after you see the first one, you can spot them everywhere that day.

You just have to know where they like to grow. We had a great year last year but this year has not been as good as we thought it would.

Southern indiana had a pathetic morel season. It got too hot and not enough moisture. The same thing happened in march when i went to AL to bass fish. It got hot so quick it screwed up there normal routine and they didnt bit at all. Global warming is starting to show up in my opinion.

Anytime Clay, You have an open invite ! (I'm thinking 2012 or used 2011 Nambo test ride......insert evil laugh here)
Truthfully- I have awesome riding right out the house door, and if any of you GG guys are coming through NW Arkansas give me a shout. Our property is home the Almosta Race every year and in the past has been AHSCS race of the Year numerous times in addition to hosting 4 or 5 OMA events- true Arkansas singletrack.
One of the Almosta Race layouts is attached......
My son graduates on May 25th and then you never know where I may show up..

Mazikeen 04-19-2012 01:35 PM

Wow I've been staring at that map for quite awhile, that is one serious back yard. My son is in Arkansas in the Air Force wonder if i could talk the wife into letting me head out and visit him, and manage to get out of the driveway without her seeing the bike hanging off the back of the jeep ;-P
