lighting up my 01.....

ok gas gas gurus..... i am trying to get a decent usable light on my 01..

it is a 2k2 oe.. i have been gathering up parts to put the old gg ducati light coil on it and i think i have all the parts and will fit today i hope..( a buddy's 99 200 has one of these on it, but not hooked up...)

anyone ever seen how one of these was wired in ? just a rectifier and light maybe ? thanks in advance..

I'll be curious to see how this works out. I have never heard of anyone
putting the old style stator on one of the newer (post 1999) GasGas.
I have that style stator on my 1998 EC250SM. I do not think mine is
hooked up right to take advantage of the extra juice. My head light is
only marginal at best. Being the stock 35/35W bulb. My set up is straight
AC without a rectifier/regulator. So the light dims when the RPMs drop.
And the turn lights stop working at lower RPMs too.
Let us know what you come up with.

i talked to a buddy who worked at the shop i bought it from.. he was around back then.. he told me to hook it up to the factory regulator and should be fine.. i have never seen or heard of this either.. the oe light is horrible..

Search out old threads from member Kent Anderson. He had used this system on newer bikes up to the 03 300 and they can be made to work very well. You can do several things and get upwards of 180w out of it. Using a stronger magnet and a better regulator he got over 200. He ran in the dark, Sweden. The threads may still be archived. Shame we dont have access to the smackover forum that preceded this,,, had lots of good info from the early days.

Depending on what you want the light for, you can run the newer high power LEDs like the VisionX. You should be able to run a pair on a rectified/regulated 2K-2 without any additional windings. 10W with 50W equavalent light output each. Not really enough for high speed desert stuff at night but will be fine foir trail riding. I had a pair on my Ducati and they made the OEM headlight irrelevant.

Nothing electrical seems to work on my 2003 EC 300 and I'm threating to have a look to see what is wrong with it one of these day. But as somebody has started a post on lighting issues I was wondering if anybody could give me a few pointers as to where to start...

Sorry for the hijack...

It all starts at the stator. Take a light bulb and hook it up between a frame ground and your stator output. The filament should flicker as you kick the engine quickly. Should light up fine with the engine running and burn out if you rev it high. After that connect your stator wiring to the regulator and try the same test with the wires from the regulator (nothing else connected). If that's good then you have harness issues (or ground issues).

Thanks Neil, that all sounds handy. That's a job for some Saturday morning I think...

The only problem is as long as she is running fine it's hard to take the time to look into lighting issues when I don't use them. However I'm the kinda guy that like everything working as it should, it keeps her in shape...

on my 01, the yellow wire for the light is between the lh rad and frame.. plugs in right there.. there is a rectifier that is in the frame up by the strg head under the gas tank..

it is on and working.. still have a few bugs to work out and get some lights..

thanks guys

Lighting up my '01

Don't know if people are still looking at this thread. My 2001 EC250 has something in a hole in the frame under the tank with wires connected to it. Is this a rectifier? I have a 2K2 stator and am trying to figure out what i need to do to add a horn. If this is a rectifier do I have DC out of it? I was thinking this was a regulator not a rectifier. I just finished putting a full DC System on my MXC200 using TrailTech and Baja Design's kits. Came out great with blinkers and horn. I don't need blinkers but would like a horn and Hi/Lo headlight. I saw the tech article on adding a horn and will follow that but isn't that assuming a DC system to start with?
Thanks
Greg
