Kick starter seized help?

Hey guys got back from a gnarly one today and outta the blue the kick starter is seized up. I know this is not good at all, can roll it either. My clutch seems to be intact so do you think the crank seized? My nambo has maybe 20 hours on it so I'm very confused any help would be great!

I assume you mean you 'can't' roll it over. Take the spark plug out and try to turn it over with the flywheel when in neutral. That will tell you if it is crank/piston related.

Take the exhaust off and have a look at the piston.

thanks keg im on it right now ill let you know

ok well thanks alot keg i took the plug out and spun the wheel in gear cause kick was still siezed and it is moving freely again, if you dont mind can you explain what you think happened?

nambo-trev 09-04-2010 05:02 PM

i went out and put the pllug back in and it didnt want to kick but i reefed on the kick and it let go and she started up.do you think something was jammed in the silencer?

With the plug out, did the kicker work?

Just trying to work out if the piston is seized or the kick starter is an issue. If you can turn the motor by the flywheel with the plug out, I would think it is clutch, kicker or gearbox issue.

If you have just un-seized it now by swinging on the kicker, I would be pulling the top off it. For the price of a bit of coolant and 2 head orings, I would be having a look....after you have had a look through the exhaust to see the piston.

I blocked muffler wont stop a motor turning over.

yes with the plug out the kicker worked but not initially i spun the rear wheel first then tried the kick starter again and it moved freely, i then put the plug in and it seemed stuck at the kick starter and then it just released. i kicked it over and it fired the first time. i went down the block with it went through all the gears and ran like it always does?

ill also add that when this first occured i was at the top of a hill and from a roll it wouldnt jump start, the rear wheel would just drag.

what am i looking for on the piston?

My 125 did something like what your describing, wouldnt turn over at all, wouldnt bump start, nothing. Pulled the stator cover off, turned the flywheel backwards by hand, and it freed up. Started fine and ran for over 50 hours before the piston shat itself, so considering the gap of time between it locking up and the piston failing, I would say they were unrelated other than the fact that it was the same bike.
Oh and I pulled the barrel off after I got home and the piston and ring were fine.

If you have pulled he head off and the top of the piston looks fine, myself personally, I would pull the barrel and look for any marks on the cylinder wall, and on side of the piston, if it got hot any seized temporarily then there will be evidence of it on the piston.
Also, if you wanted to be extra safe you could pull the primary cover off to inspect the clutch and kickstart mechanism.
