Rivet when new then clip to replace, clips suck though.

n_green 02-10-2015 04:26 AM

Same, Rivet it when its new, keep a clip in the tool bag with a mini breaker for Justin :D

I dont trust those clips, they always wear away and fling off as you unload it from the ute about to start an awesome two day ride. Rivets not so much.

I always use a clip and have never lost one. I always carry a spare.

Todd5774 02-10-2015 08:33 AM

Clip. The theory being if the chain wants to snap it will on the weak link, which is the clip, so I carry a spare clip link which only takes a few minutes to fit.

And the only time I fitted a rivet link the chain snapped last Sunday and took out half the bike with it! :D:rolleyes:

swazi_matt 02-10-2015 12:34 PM

Clip because rivet is not as simple as it sounds (one of those black arts like suspension valving)

hamilton 02-10-2015 04:53 PM

Clip is more friendly for maintance, rivet needs to be done with correct tooling.
Never had a failure from either.
Buying a cheap chain is the worst mistake.

JP4 02-10-2015 05:08 PM

Clip.

Even if the chain comes with a rivet link, I purchase the accessory clip link.

gasmonkey 02-11-2015 02:01 AM

Clip, because when your gearbag detonates and locks up you can disconnect chain to then push your bike out to be towed home.IME.

Jakobi 02-11-2015 04:21 AM

Always gone the clip.

The master link does sit out further than the rest of the chain though and as such can wear against the guide. Have had them wear out due to this and spit the clip. Even replacing the whole link is cheap in the grand scheme of things though.

SS109 02-11-2015 04:24 PM

How are you guys loosing clips due to wear? Don't you guys check your bike over once in a while? Seriously.

Clip for me. I have never lost one, worn one out, or broken one.

shang 02-11-2015 05:53 PM

Ive never lost a clip either. I still carry a spare though.

As per my last post. The pins and clip on the master link sit out further than the rest of the chain. This leaves them a bit more exposed to wear and damage, particularly if you've gone to a harder compound TMDesignworks guide, which also sits rather close/rubs in its stock position with their mounting bracket.

If everything was in perfect alignment, and you never got your chain guide caked up with mud and grit, sticks and rocks, etc you'd probably never have an issue.

Clip.....never, ever had an issue with the clip style masterlink.

I use TM Designs buffer and block on my YZ.
OEM style buffer and TM Designs block on my GG..

We put it on top of it. The silicone can flex enough where it does not tare.

Sort of like this:

hmm, never thought about it and i just put on a new sprocket. is it hard to get the silicon off? i imagine acetone would do the trick.

No, I just peel it off with a pick or screwdriver. Just changed mine out during winter tear down and it was still on there.

Rod Overstreet 03-25-2015 03:53 PM

Clip...always. Been riding since 1974, and haven't lost one yet...Knock on wood.
