Trouble shifting into 2nd

I am having lots of trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd or from neutral to 2nd. Almost feels like the shift lever is stuck when I try to shift. It is fine shifting throughout the rest of the gear range, and fine when shifting down into 2nd from 3rd. I am using rotella T4 15-40. Could it be a mechanical issue or maybe just oil related. Maybe I can add some ATF to see if it helps?

I would pull the outer clutch side cover off and look at the shift scorpion.
They can develop a sharp edge that would hamper shifting.

...

Are you talking about the star shaped part? I have no clue what is meant with "scorpion"...

Yes.
Should be obvious when you look at it while shifting.

Ok I will check it out. Are you referring to part 22/22A ?

Part 22 is the sprocket.
The scorpion is attached to the shift shaft.
Will be on the right side, below the clutch basket.

I took what I thought was the clutch cover off and do not see what everyone is talking about. Obviously I have taken off the wrong cover, I am looking at the clutch plates. Where do I need to be looking? Am I going to need to do a lot of disassembly before I?m able to pull the correct cover off?

The entire cover has to come off.
Drain the coolant.
Arrange the bolts as you remove them. Different lengths.
Leave the water pump and kick start gears intact.
