Trials bike comparison - 99 270 vs 03 280

Hi guys,
I've been looking at getting a trials bike for awhile now since it will be great cross training and I'd eventually like to try competing in trials events. Watching videos, the fun factor looks off the charts.

Unfortunately, racing has killed my budget so it's a case of it needs to be cheap. Originally I was hoping for 2005 or newer, but my budget is now slashed to about $3000, maybe $3500. Canadian dollars of course.

So, I recently found a 2003 GasGas TXT 280. The bike is in great shape, sounds awesome. Asking price is $3500. I was actually going to call and put a deposit on it today. BUT....I just found a 1999 GasGas 270 for sale for $2300. Haven't found what condition it's in yet, but since it's being sold through my sponsor (GasGas Pacific) I'm not too worried.

So, I've heard the newer Gassers are better bikes (lighter, etc). Will it matter that much for me as I'm learning the basics. I plan on upgrading down the road in a couple years once my skills have matched the bike.

Thanks,

Steve

Save the funds and get the 270. They are bulletproof.
Yes the Pro is a more competative trials bike, but for your use buy the 270, have fun and re-sell when you are ready for a more competative bike.
The first years of the Pro's had clutch and tranny issues anyhow.

Update: I bought the 99 TXT270 and am having a blast!
