When did it all start?

I have heard that the older models have had some problems with quality and I have spotted a really nice Fse 400 from 02 and i am now wondering if that is a too old model. From what I can see on the official GasGas site 2002 is this models first year, is that correct? And if it is, does it matter?
All i know is that I need a bike that offers really good handling and from what I have heard the GasGas offers that. I'm not afraid to pull out the tools if i have too I'm just worried that the spare parts will kill my wallet, if you know what I mean .

For the four-stroke I'd stay with '05 and later. The two-strokes (from at least '97 - on) have been extremely reliable and very durable.

Damn, I was hoping you wouldn't say that. I got such a good price that I am still thinking about it though. 3 500 USD sound like a very good price to me, I mean it's not a very old bike. But if they had such problems with the quality a good price can turn into a really bad price in no time.:(

Can someone please tell me if this is such a good price in reality or if it just sounds good in my head?

I believe '02 was the first year of the production for the fse400. I think you can look at the improvements made over the years for issues that you might encounter...

Starter moved from front of engine to rear.
Stronger starter.
Starter engagement mechanism redesigned
Stronger charging system
Added an extra bolt to cylinder head to eliminate possibility of blown head gasket.
Longer kickstarter.

You might want to post in the "exotics" section on thumpertalk.com to get further input on this purchase prior to moving forward.
