Starter (Motor) Question

Hi Guys,

I "fried" my starter, nothing happens when power is applied to it and there is a burnt smell when I opened it up, the armature must have gone.

What is the conventional wisdom on replacement? OEM, or is there an aftermarket brand that's better? Do I understand correctly that the KTM starters are a direct replacement?

Thanks,

Jeff

PS - A lot of starter discussion as of late I know, but I've searched and read most (if not all) of it and must have missed where starter motor replacement was discussed!

It might just need brushes mate, armatures are pretty tough on them. I believe Ktm use the same starter but do not quote me! 😜

I?ve replaced mine with crf450x brushes filed down to fit.
Been working a treat.

I'd like to know too but haven't found an answer yet.

I've used two different KTM 300 starters Doc, they fit right up (from the old style up to 2016 engine, of course). You have to change the starter rotation, though (as you may know, loosen the screws slightly and turn the center barrel 180 degrees).

For best quality, you'd have to "pony up" big $$ for an OEM version. The cheaper ones are good for experimentation, but don't seem to pack the punch of the OEMs. This may be my experience because my bike is hard to turn over in the first place.

Let us know how it goes!

Jeff

Thank you Jeff, the starter motor I ordered form a GG dealer in Germany is 155.- Euro so it can't be OEM. The original one is far over 300 Euro.

What you say about KTM starters is true as I have found out in the meantime. I talked to a guy yesterday and he said he buys the KTM starters from an ebay seller for 55 Euros. He said once the polarity is changed they last at least one season. If so, that would be ok for me. I will order one but before I do I will install the new one from the GG dealer just to see if the starting system then works or if it still hesitates...

I'll let you know how things develop Jeff!
