Don't trust what you were told, only trust what you can prove. Pull the head and cylinder, if possible, before buying. A complete rebuild, top to bottom, was $800 in parts for me. That is every moving part and gasket, including piston and rod kit. Yes you can rebuild just the crank for less than $500, but don't be surprised if you have to spend another $300 on a replate of the cylinder.

Not trying to be overly dramatic, just be prepared for any eventuality. If the bike is cheap enough, $1000 in a complete rebuild is a worthy investment (if done right the first time).
