I do it because I'm looking for the best all terrain setup. Especially up front where tire performance is so critical
A soft terrain tire works better in rocks than a hard terrain tire works in sand or mud. The former is more than acceptable, the latter is always a disaster.

Think Moab: brutal rocks, deep soft sand, snot slick clay.
