Assuming your pegs are the same as my OEM 2010 pegs.
Looking at the peg:
The pin rests inside a vertical tube in the peg. Pin has a head at the top, cotter pin at the bottom.
The vertical tube has an extension (away from the footrest area) downwards.
I cut off the tube flush on the bottom side of the peg and put it on the top side of the peg. This allows the peg to rest on the bottom frame bracket instead of against the upper frame bracket. I'm sure there is a footpeg mod thread on here somewhere....cuz I learned about it here!
