Default FSR 450 valve check and timing chain

Hi i am about to check my valve clearances for the first time, the bikes done10,000ks and its not starting as well or idling as sweet during warm up.

I have read the great valve check guide on Thumpertalk for a DRZ 400, and from what i have been told the top end is the same, so i can use that as a procedure to check and replace shims if i need to.

My question is when i am doing the valve check how do i tell if the cam chain requires replacement, is it simalar to checking a regular chain by pulling on it and see how far it rises up on the cam sprockets? i would presume that would be the time to check it, anyone go any suggestions? i have both Gas gas service manuals they just show the removal/ install, thats about it.
