So it turns out the kick start fault isn't a slipping issue. When you twist the kick start 90 degrees so that you can start the bike, it actually moves more like 120 degrees. So when you kick the bike over you slip off the starter. I presume its just a problem with the ball and spring that locate it at 90 degrees. I'll have a look tomorrow when I get a minute.
