Typically 11,12 or 1\2"(12.45)mm. Its all about leverage. Smaller bore means more leverage but more travel. Radial are larger bore but lever acts on it differently. .

There is a sweet spot for caliper to mc ratio.

Try this, there is a sweet spot for lever position. Your hand works best at some point. I've only just realised I had it out too far. But then again I'd rebuilt the mc and it had less travel to it. So what was best compromise before was clumsy later.
