Good question regarding knowing the rate. I'm not sure if they are stamped or if you'd have to get them to a tuner to be tested.
Lots of reading on the overall effect the pressure has on the fork. Long story short, its a pressure acting on one side of the free piston to increase cartridge pressure to reduce cavitation. More pressure is more resistance, which tends to mean firmer feeling.. although it's only one variable in the setup as a whole.
