Either way get rid of that needle and you will be well on the way. However with the right needle a 42 pilot might be ok. The idea is the base diameter is too narrow so you are getting bleed of big fat wet drops up the sides of the needle at low throttle. If you block that off the pilot cct will better supply atomized fuel in this range.

Keep the 40 and try a new needle in different positions. Then swap in a 42 and see what gives best off closed response.

Think I tried a cel but can't remember details. Plenty of info on the jetting threads that you've no doubt looked at.
