Absolute best way to do it is to get the bike on a stand so the rear wheel is off the ground, drop a linkage bolt out so you can lift the swing arm up freely and get the rear axle, swing arm pivot bolt and front sprocket in line. This is the tightest the chain gets so give yourself a little slack here, say about 5mm. Drop it back down put the linkage bolt back in and measure the slack now with the wheel off the ground. What ever it it is now is the tightest you should ever set it.
