It feels bad enough that I don't feel that dropping the needle one groove will have enough impact, I am steering toward going with a 172.5 main and leaving the needle where it is.

Thoughts?

Yes the stock needle is baaaaad!!

This is my opinion, base on what i have learn in this forum and testing on my bike.
Always keep an eye on the spark plug color to see whats going on with the engine!!

What notch, 3???
Going with the 172 MJ is a good idea. Try that and see how it feels...
If your not happy after that, you can lower the needle one notch.
My setting is similar, but with a 2013 gasgas.
