The '99 forks are sketchy in the rocks. The slot cut in the side of the cartridge would make it do odd things when the rocks got the suspension real busy. I'd find myself heading off the trail in more than one white knuckle episode as in NJ and PA leaving the trail means a short trip into a solid object.
I put the '96 KYB cartridges in my '99 forks (c-cycle's kit) and it made them more predictable in the high speed rough stuff.
