Default MKII Pampera engine questions

I recently bought a 2000 320 Pamp and cannot believe how hard this thing is to kick. Since I bought this bike for my wife I HAVE to find a way to make it start easier. I understand that this is a trials motor and all but can other GG parts from cylinder up be installed to make it kick more like a normal 2 stroke? Can I install a compression release?

Also, is there a pipe available for this bike other than stock?

TIA,
-tom

you may be able to use the longer Yamaha kickstarter and that would help a lot. Not sure if it fits the Pampera engine though. take yours off and take it to a Yamaha parts dealer and compare. The part number can be found from the main GGRC page, "parts crossover" link. Can't help with the pipe. No way to install any type compression release on these engines either.

Yeah they kick pretty stiff! My wife manages though, the bike starts easy even with a partial kick if its jetted right. I had thought about adding more base gaskets to drop compression a bit if neccassary.

I had the same thought about base gaskets, this thing seems to have a very high CR. My wife will need to learn but I'm still in trouble...

Can someone at least tell me the reason these things kick over like my Harley? I just went over to my KTM 250EXC to demonstrate the art of starting it and the motor turned over without me even standing up. What is it about the Pamp/ trials motor that makes it so impossible. I guess if I can figure that out I can remedy it before I have to tear it out and put a KTM motor in it...

Its hard to kick because it has tons of compession 180 to 200 psi ,which is what is required on a trials engine to in part give them their fat & flat torque characteristics, think diesel . I can't say that in this case I agree on Glenn's method of lowering compression .This being a trials engine I would be more inclined to have the head modified instead or you could retard the static timing a bit but it will run a bit hotter if you go that route. Failing the above you could have the little woman eat at Rotton Ronny's three times a day for the next few months.

You'd have about as much luck fitting that head on your bike as you would a schrunken one from some hapless African missionary. Go to the tech articles section at the top of the page and see, head squish mod from RBD.

Yeah they are completely different motors. The base gasket trick is not the best but good for an experiment to see about where you need to be for compresison before cutting the head.
