Default engine tick

My 03 300 has developed a ticking noise at idle,as you throttle up it goes away, then chop the throttle afew times it revs down and dies.I have read of the rattling noise due to pv out of adjustment. This is not a rattle but a ticking noise, sounds like an exhaust leak, but doesnt seem to have one.Any ideas? Thanks.Bty,it has weak power at low rpms, then hits hard mid and top.

Thanks for the reply,I think I should take a look at the PV adjustment to check for slop. What would cause piston slap?

Worn rings..

How many hours on the top end? Generally piston slap will be most noticable when cold and get somewhat better once the engine comes up to temp.

I am not sure on engine hours as I got it used,I was told less than 100 hours. The noise stays the same warm or cold.Maybe reed valve?

Easy to pull the reed block and inspect for damage/wear. Would cause the bike to run pretty crud at lower revs though and have trouble idling and starting.. Generally if your confident in doing so, it wouldnt be a bad idea to pull the top end and clutch to inspect for wear considering its second hand and in unknown condition

Who did you send the engine to? I've contacted a few about porting but haven't found anyone willing to do port work on the gasser.
