Bogging down off idle
Until today I was running
NEDW 2 170 main 42 pilot AS 1 out I felt it might?ve been running a bit lean so I swapped to 172 main 45 pilot AS 1.5 out When coasting along in gear with the throttle completely closed and going slow, when I crack the throttle wide it give me the BWAHH sucking for air noise and lose all power for a second before taking off. I think this means a lean condition? I?m confused because I richened everything in the carb except the needle position. What is going on? |

First rule of tuning your carb jetting...just change one setting at a time...test it and see what result is...
To be sure, go back to your original setting of... NEDW 2 170 main 42 pilot AS 1 out What throttle opening does it feel lean at? Change the component that relates to that throttle opening. Best of luck, Dave. |

It never actually felt lean with the original settings. For the pilot I was just going off of the idle speed and air screw position. I was reading that I?d want my air screw between 1.5 and 2.5 out but at 1.5 I was getting a super fast idle so I thought I would try a bigger pilot. For the main I increased the size just based off of others suggestions I still haven?t tried a chop test. I kept the 172 main and went back to 42 pilot with AS one turn out. The bogging went away. Is it possible that a too rich setting can cause that bogging down hesitation?

Yes, for sure, too rich or too lean can feel like it's bogging. Basically if the mixture isn't right, too rich or too lean, it just won't pull cleanly.
Sometimes it difficult to feel if it's lean or rich (for me anyway!), the only way to be sure is to experiment... First, try going richer - is it better or worse? Then try going leaner - is it better or worse? All the best, Dave. |

Yes I have a hard time telling if it is slightly lean or slightly rich. But this time I did richen it 3 sizes on the pilot and noticed a huge difference in a bad way. So I think I?m happy where I am for now. Thanks for your help
