Default How do I remove the ignition sprocket?

Help! I’m repairing the e-start on my ‘13 XC300 and can’t figure out how to remove the ignition sprocket. I see threads inside the large nut holding the sprocket on. Do I need a special tool that threads in there, or does anyone have any other tricks to keep the unit still so I can remove the large nut on the sprocket?

I figured the Honda bendix swap would be the more difficult part...

Thanks!

You just need to remove the large nut. 1/2 impact gun is the easy way.
When you install it and torque to spec just put the engine in gear and use something like an old screwdriver handle between the rear sprocket teeth and chain to keep the wheel from spinning.

Really? I have an air impact wrench. I figured that would just turn the motor...

I’ll have to grab a 31mm socket for it and give it a shot.

Update: Thanks Hamilton, that was the ticket! No 31mm sockets available, but a 1 1/4” socket and my air gun got it done. I have electric start now!!!

After you remove the nut you will need a flywheel puller. Do not pry on the flywheel as it can damage the bearings or flywheel.

Leo, I wondered about that. Turns out my impact vibrated the gear less than the bars do when I?m riding so I?m not too concerned. Hopefully there will be no reason to pull that gear again for a long while...

Thanks Zman. Thankfully I didn?t have to pull the flywheel. I was just replacing the ignition sprocket because the PO ground some teeth off. New Honda Bendix parts and a new ignition sprocket and she?ll start cold with the first push of the button.

I do have to laugh at the starting instructions in the manual. It seems like even GasGas knew the e-start was a dud from the gate. Look at the attached image below, it looks like the e-start instructions still tell you to use the kick starter vigorously!
