I'll always own a 2 stroke if for no other reason than to annoy the EPA and the bark humpers.

I don't think any dirt bike rider's garage is complete without a 4 stroke for Dual sport/mountain or desert exploring and a 2 stroke for racing or hardcore riding. A man needs both to be complete.

What year in the US did they "ban" the sale of 2 stroke bikes for the street? I remember growing up several people had the Yamaha RD350's, RZ350's, etc along with the KE100, and other large 2 stroke street bikes like the Kawasaki 500 triples, etc.

I guess if you still owned one you could ride it no problem. Was the ban in the mid 1980s?

Oh, wait, never mind... the Chinese 50cc 2T scooters are everywhere. Along side the Yamaha riva, Honda spree, and all the other 2T. I saw a vintage Yamaha DT50 the other day, mint condition for $700.

I sold my KTM 450 and switched to a GG300. Best move I made. I can ride this bike far better and easier than the 450, it doesn't wear me out as much.
I can also spit the cases if I have to and not need $500 in special tools as with the KTM. Don't get me wrong, the KTM is a fantastic bike. But as far as $$ wise, the 2T just makes sense.

They never banned 2t's for sale just manufactures found it to expensive to get them throught emisions on high performance bikes. Scooters are almost all two-stroke and they are 100% legal.
2T vs 4T is a hard thing, I've said it before and will say it again, if I did moto and didn't race in the woods I'd ride a 4T hands down. The 4T just works better on the track and is easier to put down good consistant lap times. I think the 2T's work better in the woods however. Snappier response and weight make the 2T work better. I think you can get a better instantaneous jump of acceleration out of the 2T also that the 4T just can not produce, that jump seems to work in the woods when tight also.
Don't know how to explain it but it seems that 2T's the throttle controls how fast the motor revs and 4T's the throttle controls how fast it will rev and how high. No matter how perfect a 2T is jetted since this can effect the reving the bike seems to rev through the range. A 4T seems to have to have throttle wide open to rev through range and that seems to not work for me.

cheers,
Rick

I'm pretty sure there was an outright ban on any 2 stroke street bike over 50cc implemented in 87ish. I think it was that way to allow mopeds to still be sold but nothing more than that. I think that ban is all inclusive now. I could be wrong though.

Anyone who likes the wide power spread of a 4 stroke only needs to ride a GG 300 2 stroke.

Nuff said.

Was that directed at me?
I think that's the way I'd like to go.

Although I didn't intend my comments for anyone in particular if you feel in your gut that it was meant for you then it certainly was.

Ain't no 4 stroke runs better at any rpm than my GG EC300.

I've heard people say two-stroke street bikes were banded but I can't find anything that says it anywhere. Its just a matter of emisions as far as I can see, with a few states such as California and others trying to ban two-strokes alltogether. Several manufactures as I type still have street legal two-strokes. Some mopeds and at least a few larger than 50cc's I know. I've been wrong before however....lol
