Default Why would a 250 2T kickback when starting?

The bike is an 05 MC250 and it kicks back toward the end of the kickstarter stroke but runs awesome. It takes about 3-4 kicks to get it started with about 1/2 of the kicks usually resulting in a nasty kick back. Idles, carberates and runs really strong. The mark on the stator is right in the middle of the bolt hole opening, and was told this is correct.

Any other reasons---

Sounds like its advanced too much. As soon as I can I'll look at my old bike. What I do know is that when I installed the lighter ignition, I timed it by installing one 5mm cap screw and flat washer for the 2K-3 stator in the 2 o'clock position, flush to the case. The 2K-2 stator is then rotated clockwise until the plate(in the notched area) hits the edge of the washer. Thats how it worked out.

Did you use a timing light or anything? How did you end up at this setup?

I did it by indexing the magnet strip on the flywheel in relation to the trigger coil to the same position as the 2K-3 ignition I swapped out, which had an insert in one of the slots to time it. Motor at TDC. This worked out to be about the same position as my '00 XC250.

What are the possibilities that it could be kickstart related?

Its a simple mechanism, a rachet basically. It will slip if the engine starts in the correct direction, but catch and cause the kick back if it fires backwards.

Retard the timing and try it. I found a photo of another bike, timed like mine. This is the bike I got the 2K-2 from. Notice the edge of the cutout in the stator plate in relation to the 5mm hole in the case at about 2 o'clock. Also notice that the 6mm stator plate mounts are not centered, but a more retarded than center.

I made an error in the previous post, I ment rotate the stator counterclockwise, not clockwise, until the plate hits the bolt/washer you install.

Hope this helps, both my '03 and '00 ran great like this.

Thank you very much for the information. I can now picture what you meant and I was thinking counter clockwise so this all makes sense now.

Really appreciate the help.

Default Update: kick back solved

Just wanted to send a little update for anyone that experiences this problem in the future.

After install new kickstart rachet gears(because they were stripped from the kick back issue) my bike was still experiencing the kick back problem so under the above advice I retarded the ignition about 1 and 1/2 thicknesses of the stator alignment mark. Moved it just a touch counter clockwise.

A previously hard to start, kick backing MC250 was transformed into a single kick purring kitten.

Thanks for the advise GMP!
