Aftermarket Carb - 1998 EC250
Hi,
Does anyone know if either of these will work with my bike or if one is better than the other? Trying to get her back running after sitting up for about 5 years. https://www.amazon.com/Motorcarb-Str..._t2_B00C178JY4 https://www.amazon.com/KIPA-Carburet..._t3_B00C178JY4 Is one better than the other as far as aftermarket goes? Thanks for your help! |

Yes, I assume they are not the best quality but don't want to spend $300+ for a Keihin. Just want to get it running.

I know of some guys that have run them with decent results but don't expect them to last like a Keihin would.
Ok, to answer your question, no one will be able to tell you which will work on your bike or which is best as they are knockoffs. No one will know if the inlet and outlet bells are the same as Keihin or what the slides are cut to. You'll just have to order and compare to what you already have since they don't list measurements on the ads. If you do buy one, please, at least ditch the absolutely horrible jets they come with and replace with genuine Keihin jets so you can actually jet your bike correctly. The ones they come with, their number sizing, if they even have any markings, do NOT match up with Keihin jets. I don't know what the slide it cut at so that could cause some tuning/rideability issues. Hmm, maybe you can use your current slide in the knockoff? Good luck if you go for it and please do a follow up, good or bad, here on the forum please!

Thanks for the help.
If I do decide to get the Keihin, is 016.167 the correct one? |

Last question:
Has anyone had any success with a rebuild kit? From what i can gather it is a 38mm Keihin PWK AS1 carb. Anyone have a recommendation for a good rebuild kit? Thanks again for the help! |

Buy a lectron . Super simple and if you need to you can recover some of your money back.

JD Jetting will probably be your best bet, unless someone knows of something better. Buy the jetting and the rebuild kit AND the Jet block o-ring gasket. You will have to buy some star wrenchs with the little hole in the center (dont remember name of them) from auto parts place if you dont have. Get some chem-dip or something, soak the carb and all the parts in there, rinse off, new gaskets and jetting, etc, and it will be like new. All 3 kits on JD site is like $170ish i think.

That PWK AS1 is a very good carb! In your situation I'm with jerseymike - $46 for a rebuild kit and some time (plus $17 if you do the jet block gaskets) and you've got one of the best OEM-type carbs around.
And as you may know, that '98 EC 250 is counterbalanced - I've always wanted to ride one of those! Jeff

Before you buy the rebuild kits take a look at the needle jet inside the carb. You will need to look down the slide hole from the screw top end. See if the needle jet (hole where the needle goes up and down with the slide) is round or if it is worn oval.
This part is not commonly available. You can replace it with a STIC metering block, buy another carb or buy a good used metering block from someone that installed a STIC. BTW I have a few of the metering blocks from 38mm PWK AS1 carbs that we converted to STICs. |
