I have Vstrom for street and looking for a dirtbike mainly for singletrack riding.

I think EC300 will fit my needs better, just need speedometer/odometer, brake-light, horn to make it street-legal.
If you want it for single track, what does top speed have to do with anything?

You need to look at the 2010 and 2011 reviews, and include those written by the new members of this board. The bikes have taken very positive steps of improvement in even the last two years, and Chilly's reviews often mistate or simply miss levels of equipment and refinement.

Bottom line - ride one and see for yourself. There are lots of guys who would be willing to let you swing your leg over their personal bikes.

I have a few friends with dual-sport bikes. Once in a while I want to ride with them. A little more top speed than my TE310 had will make it a more versatile bike. I just dont want to buy a heavy bike to get more speed.

That pretty much eliminates buying a Husaberg then!

If you leave the stock gearing of 13-48, then the top speeds will be higher, but I still wouldn't want to dual sport the EC300. Besides the 13-48 gearing doesn't work as well in single track, at least New England single track.

I have my 250 geared low( 13/52) for mountain climbing. rock crawling, and to avoid first gear in bar width trees. Even with this I can cruise at 60 on road sections if needed, topped out is around 70. Yes its up there in the revs but two strokes should be modulated no matter what speed your going. The tires on pavement at that speed scrare me more than blowing up the motor.

If you're not satisfied with what the TE310 puts out as top speed/power. Then I doubt very much you would like a EC300 top speed /power combo.
There is no way to have one bike that is a great D/S with an cruse'n speed of 65-70mph on the highway and still is light and nimble enough for tight S/T bush riding period.
That's why most of us have more than one bike.

Binsel,
If the GasGas had a wider ratio spread it would do fine for some pavement riding. I'm sure it can handle short runs at 90 kph for joining up trails. Modern two strokes don't have very good road manners. I don't want to waste good tires on pavement, so top speed isn't that much of a concern to me.
Your decision has to be based on how much "dual sport" riding you need to do. I find pavement riding so boring that I always avoid it.

I use my ec250 as a dualsport only to connect blacktop to trails. The mph is mostly 25 to 35. But if U wanted to go faster pavement U can carry a 12 and 13 front sprocket and switch them out according to speed. Takes 5 or ten minutes.

My 07 ec300 with 13/49 gearing will do over 80 and cruise at 55-60 for hours on end after RBD did his magic to my carb. Now the bike has over rev like a 250 but retains the low end grunt of the 300.
