Realistically this is a good thing for most amature racers, but it looks bad on paper. If they make a nice, tight die cast motor with thin light cases and water jackets, it will be no different than the POS KTMs you mentioned.
While I agree pretty much with all you are saying, the fact that the bike is heavy is a turn off to a smaller rider. Get in a bottle neck or mud hole it's heavy as heck! This fact alone kept me from getting my 12 y/o a 200. The pumpkins are much more appealing due to the weight. While they may not be as bullet-proof as the GG, they are dependable enough to win nationals. I see KTM as the NY Yankees of the off-road world. They have the capitol to buy whom they want and put the cash into the bikes to keep them going. I hope GG keeps moving forward. I absolutely love my '12 300. And another thing to consider, the national enduro's aren't what they used to be. Much less demanding on equipment.

I think that when talking about what is appropriate for a kid moving to a full size bike, if weight is a consideration, get the kid a nice Husky or YZ 125. Its a good idea anyway, to teach throttle/clutch control and momentum. My son is a tall, strong 13 yr old. He can ride my '07 250 with no problems even in technical rocky terrain, and yes he has dropped it and picked it up with no drama. He would have no issues with the 200, but might learn more on a 125.

We have similar issues...tall 13 y/o's. (5'-9", he'll be 13 the end of Jan.) I ended up getting him a '13 200 (of a different color). Coming off a 105, I felt going to a 125 would almost be going backwards when you factor in the power to weight ratio.

2 GG riders at the scratch podium in the 1st race of the Spanish Enduro :

1 25 CERVANTES MONTERO, IVAN ENDURO 2 KTM MC. Segre 48:27'010
2 43 MCCANNY , DANNY ENDURO 3 GAS-GAS 49:05'900
3 51 THAIN , RODRIG ENDURO 3 GAS-GAS 49:15'010

Danny won the E3 class ahead of Thain. I'm really surprised with Thain that coming from a 4ST easily adapt to the 300 and placed 2nd in E3 .

Fabian planet and the Sherco placed 4th overall scratch .

is he really sponsored by Kenny-G?? the saxophonist that grated eardrums in the 90's ;-)

Jokes aside, GG are going to have to come up with some good numbers to keep Danny McCanny on GG. the way that youngster rides it is only a matter of time before he ends up on a pumpkin like nambotin

Thain in the podium on day 2 of Chile's WEC round. He placed 3rd and missed the same spot on day 1 by mear 0.57 sec. Shows how good he adapt to the 300 and I think it also shows "how easy" the bike might be.

Danny also had a good round on the Junior class with 2nd place on day 1 and 5ht on day 2 after a close encounter with a tree that caused him some pain throughout the rest of the day .

A good overall result for GG !

PS - notice that both are currently using the 48 Zokes :-)...
