Dual sport gearing for a 2013 XC300

I have an extra set of wheels that I'll set up with some fairly aggressive DS tires (Kenda 270 or Shinko, etc).

Since the stock sprockets are 13/50, I'm looking at the possibility of putting a 44T rear sprocket on the DS rims. I have other options, but this is the ratio I'm pursuing.

Now, our Arizona DS are often called "Cruel Sport." Often there are B-level single track trails mixed in. Very, very little road. I will be carrying a gallon of gas so I can get a range of 100 to 120 miles.

Thoughts?

My 2010 is plated with stock gearing. I pretty much only ride B level Single Track and only end up on pavement to connect trails. I rev out at 50mph

If I was gonna do more pavement I would go a couple teeth less then I have because I am always being passed on the highway

Why not go the less expensive route of a 14T primary(unless it won't allow enough clearance for the chain & case guard).

I'd love to, but in previous years the 14T doesn't fit without surgery, and then, barely so. I have a text in to Clay about the 2012-13 model.

I'm kind of amazed that you're only getting 50mph. I got 80 out of my 13/52 DE250 next to a GPSed KTM300.

My concern is range and a little bit of speed should the ride leader screw up and need to put us on pavement for too long.

I'm also wonder what a modded 300 could pull on modest (non-hill climby, usually) single track -- 13/44 ?

One of my buddies ran 13/46 all the time on his 06 300 and it was fine. Would do mid 90's topped out and he went anywhere anyone can go.

Yeah mine with 13/50 will do 80mph without maxing out. Its much more comfy sitting around 50/55mph though. Doesn't feel like your ringing its neck so hard (6000-7000rpm).

I think I could easily pull 13/45. My bike will pull away in 2nd gear with the 50 tooth from a stand still.

Rocky Mt has steel rear sprockets in the 42 and 49 size. The are listed for a 91 Suzuki dr250S. Rear sprockets for that "S" model are the same as gasser sprockets. I have used them and they fit fine. Here are some final gearing numbers: 13/42 = 3.2331
13/44 = 3.3846
12/42 = 3.500
13/48 = 3.692

I'm temped to go with the 13/44 but have a 12T in my pack just in case the leader gets stoopid on us and goes full Cruel Sport.
