Piston & rings Questions
Whats the consensus on Pistons
Forged or cast ? Brand ? I've never done a top end before ,but feel maybe I ought to . Been riding my 08 for two years now. I saw a wiesco piston & ring set for $199.00, Is that a decent deal? And I read something about a & b pistons. What does that mean ? |

With the 300 id go forged as youre probably not revving it like crazy so the extra wieght wont matter.Forged is stronger. if you were racing and changing pistons alot cast would be okay They used to be cheaper that and weight was the cast advantage I dont think theyre cheap anymore?I,ve gotten the wossner and an athena (which was a wossner) I like the coating I know it works well in auto applications.
Your cylinder is marked A B C That is your piston size if your nikasils intact I bought my wossner from a guy on ebay racepartsplus cheap he seemed like a decent guy too. Stoby Last edited by Stoby; 08-09-2011 at 05:13 PM. Reason: add something |

Now, for trivia. There's a W cast into my OEM piston (2001 xc300). Is that for Wossner, Wiseco or WTF? Maybe my answer is in the question. Or there's a question withing the question... since Wisecos are forged, not cast... ****** wandering off-topic as usual... or not... My only Wiseco experience involved exciting cutting, grinding and filing of a brand new piston. But that was for a dirtbike nobody normal cares about (1978 DT 175e). I'll see if I can find those photos. I'm not sure how long the piston-port era lasted... or how important the little indented shapes in our GG pistons are... subtle differences there for sure.

All of the Wiseco's I have seen don't have the coated skirts like the Wossner's do. I wonder if the GG factory spec'd Wossner as a stock oem piston.
My cylinder has an "A" stamped on the outside bottom rear, I guess for the fitment of a new "A" piston. One thing is for sure, I won't be spending $362 for a stock GG piston. I found an ad in Dirt Bike magazine that says Wossner opened up a new warehouse in Socal. Maybe this is why I have seen the Wossner GG kits go pretty cheap on E G A Y... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-09...item20bada3dbd

I'm not sure this is indicative of the attention to detail on their other pistons, but it left a bad taste in my mouth for the Wiseco brand.
