Crank seal leaky.

I alway pride myself to have a bike that does not smoke.
While doing trail work for the Caney Creek enduro, my bike started billowing smoke.

Took the clutch cover off to replace the crank seal.
The seal was installed crooked from the factory.
The bushing that the seal rides on had a groove that was about 2mm wide-this was from the seal being crooked.

Not too bad for a 5 year old bike.

So now I'm waiting for the parts to come in.
Good thing is, the case does NOT have to be split to remove the seal.

Oh, while pulling the water pump cover off, two of the bolts snapped off. Not good. Thing is, I did not even have to mess with the water pump cover.

Hi!

It seems that I have the same problem now but I think it comes from the new counterbalancer shaft seal I installed when I fixed the gearbox problem. Today I am going to check it. Is there any trick that it needs so that is installed properly and doesn't leak?

Just another moment to champion a personal cause here. All dirt bike owners should invest in a bottle of Anti-sieze paste and use it on as many fasteners as they can. Especially the triple clamp bolts, handlebar mounts and bar clamp bolts, engine case screws - anything that threads into aluminum should be coated with anti-sieze. Still on a bottle I bought when Reagan was in office. Wonderful preventive medicine for dirt bikes.

I second Hawkeye's sentiments, and sad to say but the tub of it I have is of the same vintage. It needs a good stir now and then, but lasts forever. As a side benefit it will ruin any and all clothing that it comes in contact with, and does a number on your wash machine if said clothing is thrown in without realizing a glob of it is stuck to the backside of a sleeve. My wife still brings it up.

I did have "anti-sieze" on the bolts. Which I did when the bike was new.
The bike never breaks, so I never have to pull anything apart.

Any who, the crank seal fixed the problem.

You have it torn half way apart why not yank it, split the cases and put new main bearings, seals and gaskets? It really isn't that big of a job, I am in the middle of doing it right now on my 02 due to tranny failure, did not to long ago on my 99 before I sold it. I always take the cases to a trusted machinist to have the old bearings pressed out. Freeze the new ones and bake the cases and you will be shocked how easily the bearings FALL into the cases.

Actually, it was torn 1/4 of the way apart. Only had to pull the side case cover off.

I'll be getting an '07, so I did not want to do a full tear down.
BTW, the crank had "0" play.
