Default How Cold?

Just wondering about the weather, the Vikings/ Seahawks game has a predicted temp of 0* F. What's the coldest temperature you've ever went riding in? How cold before you say "forget it, I'm staying inside!"? I've been ice-racing/ riding when it was -20* F. That was '76 or '77, had to have a kid on a 3 wheeler pull-start my Can Am. I couldn't spin the engine fast enough with the kickstarter (gear lube at -20 isn't that fluid!). Years later ('86?) I was racing an XR 350, temp around 0*, had some frostbite/ wind burn on my face just under the goggles. Got to adjust the valves on my buddy's Yam SR500 bare-handed, on a lakeshore that day! Somehow we all survived.

12* F this year at our annual black Friday ride when we started mid morning, warmed up a few degrees. I just add one more layer and some latex gloves under my regular gloves, I was sweating a mile in. Not really interested in riding if it's much colder than that.

18 degrees f. a couple years ago on our favorite (rough) single-track trail, shock and forks were so cold it was like riding on a brick. I'll pass.

Last year we raced in a foot of snow (no studs) and temps were in the 20's. I was soaking wet with sweat at the end of the race. I just had a layer of under armor and regular riding gear on. Also a pair of Moose gloves that I bought at Halls, warmest gloves I have ever owned.

I've ridden when it has been snowing and in the 30F range a few times....rare in the desert....hands hovering around the cylinder every time we stop.

Almost one year ago exactly, I raced an enduro event up by Lubbock called the Lone Star Enduro - it was a 2 day event.
Saturday's race was in the low 70's - absolutely amazing.
We woke up on Sunday to mid 30's and rain/sleet. When we finished the day, the temperature had dropped into the low 20's. Since it was sleeting, I removed my goggles.
I had blurred vision for about 2 weeks. Although I wore surgical gloves under my regular gloves, the tips of my fingers were numb for well over a month. I was actually worried that I had done some damage. Back in the woods at the roughly half-way point, I thought that it was a bridge too far in terms of cold, but the checkpoint had a huge bonfire. It was like heaven - my camelbak was frozen solid, so getting it thawed was nice as I needed a drink.

Looking back it was a fun adventure, but it sucked at the time.

-28 C (which according to Googles unit translator is around -18 F) with my then brand new KTM LC4 Adventure in February 2003. On original Metzeler Sahara 3 tyres. These were really slippery, believe me
