Default 2005 EC 250 headlight wiring question

I bought the bike used, with just a plastic number plate and no headlight. I plugged in a halogen headlight and it didn't work. I thought that perhaps the other wires were for a handlebar switch and that they needed to be connected to complete the circuit. Still no success so I got out the multimeter. When the two individuals were connected I went from no volts at the headlight plug to 1 volt. What am I missing?

Your volt meter has to be set on "ac".

Oh yeah, of course. I'll try again and report back. Are those two individual plugs made for a handlebar switch? Any idea why the light wouldn't work?

I just got the lights working on my new to me '01 XC 200. Mine had a on/off switch for the lights mounted inside headlight housing/number plate. The switch was faulty. Replaced a broken brake light switch and cleaned up the tail light and installed two new tail light bulbs.

Lights work like new, now.

Turned out the bulb I was testing with had one beam burned out. I just mounted an LED light bar and now I'm trying to wire in a DC reg/rectifier, but I don't have a white wire coming out of the stator. I posted more details in the DC sticky at the top.

Just to follow up, I mounted a cheap LED light bar for the 25 hour race. It worked great as a floodlight. Cheap optics prevent it from projecting the light real far, but I had two Cyclops Adventure lights on my helmet and they worked together really well. I wired the light bar straight to the factory harness, no DC rectifier or anything. No flickering or problems of any kind. The only problem is that with no battery, as soon as you lock up the rear tire and stall the engine the light goes out. It's in those moments that I realize how helpful that light bar actually is!

Glad it works now.

I know it's an old post but can you explain to me how you wired in the light bar? I've just bought one and a loom which includes a relay and a fuse. Can't get it to work.

If your bike is the 05 mentioned in other posts, you have an AC system. The relay coil in the kit may be DC coil. Try connecting the new light between stator yellow and frame/engine ground. If it turns on when the engine runs you are done. If not find out if the light bar requires DC voltage. That will require a DC rectifier to be added to your setup.

Stator white and frame/engine ground to input of rectifier. Output of rectifier directly to your new lamp (do not ground the rectifier output).
