You'll want to pull the motor if you haven't already, because you're likely in for a case-split.

I wouldn't think that was a spring, but rather just the form it took when it peeled off.

Pull the motor, get the right side cover off, pull the clutch, and see what you see. If there are no obvious signs there the issue lies deeper inside.

What Steve said.

I'm assuming it's still locked up in gear, so as per original, get the rhs engine cover off and have a gander. Post up some pics if you're after further opinions or not sure how it should look and then take it from there.

Got the side cover off. Here are some photos. I see nothing wrong from this side. I can get the motor to turn over by turning the clutch basket. So, I guess I will be splitting the cases after I give the bike a bath.
