help with fuel tap please

i have just bought a hardly used ec250 1998 in great condition.
i ran out of petrol the other day,the bike went onto reserve as normal but only ran for 2 miles until it totally emptied the tank.
i have taken the tap off the tank and everything seems to work ok so i did some measurements and found out that the reserve is half a uk pint,which if it does 40 mpg then it will do 2 miles on reserve which is exactly what happened when i ran out of petrol.
is this normal and how can i make the reserve better.
also what mpg should i get

You will have to lengthen the main fuel supply tube on the petcock. That way you will run out of fuel quicker, but have a longer reserve.

On my '98 EC250, I was getting 50 miles to a tank. I ended up putting a 3 gallon IMS tank on it for better range.
