Default gas gas 300 kick start.

hello i am wondering if anyone can help me.
i have just bought a 2002 gas gas 300 2 stroke but i am concerned about the way it kicks.
it only seems to have any sort of feel on the kick about an inch from the bottom.
is this normal
thanks.

Is there enough room next to the pipe, to index the lever on the shaft, by one tooth higher?

It sounds to me like your cogs aren't engaging properly. I wouldn't let it go very long. That clutch cover is a breeze to remove. Take it off and look at the movement of the cog and mechanism as you rotate the starter. Look for wear, or shavings in the area. Replacing any of those parts shouldn't be too difficult, or expensive.
