Trivia Question: Which is a better engine design SOHC or DOHC?
I'm posting this question here, since it is not brand specific. This is regarding general four-stroke engine design for any manufacturer. Some brands use SOHC, while others use DOHC.
Trivia Question: Assuming a four-stroke engine has the same number of valves... Which is the better engine design SOHC or DOHC? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

This topic has been discussed many times on other forums, but in general:
The SOHC is is lighter, and the DOHC is better for high revs (and thus higher hp). This is why all the 250 4T's are DOHC, except the Honda which has it's own proprietary single cam over valve with rocker for the exhaust. Even though the SOHC is lighter and simpler, I suspect that we won't see any new SOHC motors come into production. |
