Top end rebuid w/o engine removal possible ?
Do you know if its possible to remove the head and the cylinder with engine still in the frame ? That will make top-end rebuilds much easier to do w/o the need to remove completly engine from frame...i believe that head cover can be removed easely because valve adjustments but dont know about head and cylinder...

You didn't say what year (or what size), but I own an early '03 400 FSE and had to do a complete top-end rebuild this past winter thanks to drowning it in a massive mudhole. The entire job was performed with the engine still in the frame. The seat, tank and shrouds were all I removed (and the entire exhaust...best to put this back on all at once, loosely, then tighten everything up). I did have to loosen the subframe and rotate it slightly on the lower mounts to allow enuf space to get the throttle body out.
