My youngest was balancing a bicycle without training wheels before he was 3. Couldn't even reach the lower pedal, just pushed the bike up the driveway and coasted down. Soon after he was trying to imitate freestylers by putting his feet on the bars. Exceptional balance, but can't catch a ball to save his life. There all different.
NETRA seems to have a great kids program compared to other associations. |

My oldest has been riding without training wheels since he was four. Best tool I found, for teaching him balance, was a folding Razer scooter. It was more difficult teaching him how to pedal and use a coaster brake. For his 6th b-day he's getting a bigger (20-inch wheels) bicycle with hand brakes. That'll teach him how to use to hand controls.
The thing to remember is all kids learn at a different pace. Trying to push your kids or living vicariously through them is what creates "little league syndrome" in parents. There are a few of those in the NETRA Pee Wee program, but thankfully not as many, and not nearly as bad, as the ones I encountered in the NETRA Junior Enduro program. I enjoyed putting on Junior Enduros for the kids, but after encounters with a couple parents I'll never do another one again. |
