Default Adding a rec/reg to 2011....

I've had a battery fitted my to 2011 and was working OK for a while I seem to only get a few months out of the battery.

I have a universal 5wire 2 phase rec reg fitted. Voltage out was going up over 20v so it has failed.

Just wanting to check my wiring as it did work OK when fitted.

Dc out and sense wire are fitted to the battery and hid via an isolated set of cables.
I have the ac inputs connected to white wire from stator and a frame earth.
I read that the yellow and white cannot be connected as they are out of phase. So I should be getting the full unregulated ac output via the white into my rec/reg?

Does this seem correct?

Thanks

Check the wiring diagram, the electric start ones may be wired differently

The universal R/R may not be a good match for the bike. The white and yellow wires are not out of phase, they are simply different "taps" on the complete winding. Both may be used for different puposes. I use the yellow+ground for AC power to my heated grips. The white wire+ground goes into the stock R/R and does the battery charging. My LED lights are connected to operate on DC power. The GG stator is single phase.

This is the rec/reg i was using.

Supposedly full wave with a sense wire.
When i tried my current one with the sense wire connected, it was dropping the DC output to 3-4v without the sense connected it was going over 20v.

Any different type you would recommend?

I have my yellow wire running the brake and tail light as i was getting earthing issues with the brake switches and DC.

I don't know what a sense wire is. You would need a schematic of the RR internals to know how it is supposed to work. The question is what happens with the grounding? With two wires marked as AC input, it could need an isolated AC supply. The GG stator is not isolated since the bottom point of the winding is actually ground.

The usual way to get around this is to leave the DC output floating. This means white (or yellow) plus ground into the RR with the DC output not being grounded.

You used the white and ground as the AC input to your aftermarket RR. You could use yellow and ground as input to reduce the voltage a bit. This might give you more battery life.

Cheers the sense wire is meant to be connected to the +dc side to "switch on" the rec/reg.

I have the dc side completely isolated from the chassis and ac, it runs a new loom of that goes to my switch gear battery horn and hid.

I should have another rec/reg tomorrow to test

Sounds like you have it set up correctly; with the DC isolated the RR should work fine.
