Default '06 300 Speedo problems. Should turning of front wheel switch unit on?

Hello all

Please could you help, I have bought a 2nd hand ec300 2006 and noticed that when I start the bike, the instrument panel comes on. However, with the bike switched off and on the stand, if I rotate the front wheel the instrument display remains off. (on my KTM the unit would switch on if the wheel was rotated)

It also appears that the speedo is not showing a speed reading when I ride so I assume that I may have a problem with the magnetic sensor or it's wire not sending a signal to the unit. (the other functions seem fine)

Please could someone confirm if the unit should switch on simply by rotating the wheel or pushing the bike when not running?

Many thanks for any help
Matt
