Fixing up a 2003 EC200

Hi All, I have posted very little on this forum. My name had been Scootskipper, but now I'm Bulgas, which feels like a much better fit. I've got this old 200 that I picked up cheap. It was a runner and I rode it a few times and determined two things: I really like this bike and find it to be a very confidence inspiring bike and secondly that it needs some TLC and I want to go through it completely. I'm 54 and a seasoned motorcyclist that has averaged 15,000 + miles annually for many years, but something of a novice off road. I'm eager to hear some opinions and anecdotes from others with these bikes. I had a Husqvarna WR125 for about a year and a half, but I find this to be a much easier bike to ride. I do ride a mountain bike and work on my fitness training and my goal is to become a decent hare scramble rider.
I'm looking for an owner's manual at the moment. Hopefully one will pop up on ebay soon.

Congrats on the gasgas. I see by your other bikes listed you have taste! Hence the purchase of a gasgas. A lot of great guys on here full of info. I wouldn't hold your breath for an owners manual giving you much info. When you do find them they are very vague, as far any details for a teardown and rebuild. There is a front page to the site that has good info and a torque chart.

Good luck on the rebuild and we will want pictures when she's all finished.

The intake boot on the Rad Valve needs to be replaced. Other than that it looks like it really could use a tear down and good cleaning / inspection.

I have a 99 EC 200 that I have owned since 2000. By far the most robust machines I've owned.

To get the most out of the most 200 motor jetting is critical .

Verify the proper squish band, most if not all GG motors benefit from this mod. Do a search and you'll be overwhelmed with info.

Verify suspension spring rate front and rear....adjust accordingly. LTR is a very good shop for dialing in Zokes and Ohlins shocks. See Les's banner on this site.

The 200 motor is deceptively strong and likes to be wrung out like a small bore 125, yet can be lugged down like it's bigger brothers. A 2k3 ignition will add more flywheel affect and increase power out put, larger brighter lights, grip heaters, etc.

If a spark arrestor is not required in your area, then I'd look for a better replacement for the FMF TCII. DEP Pipes makes " shortly" type silencers and should offer better performance, thou I have never tired on, as a spark arrestor is required in my area.

I am 51 and have raced my 200 in cross country and endure events for the last10 years with no issues.

As for the owners manual try Go.Fasters or go on line at the official GG MOTORS Website,they can be down loaded and printed.

Thank you for the responses. One of the previous owners of this bike was a suspension specialist. He is a good friend of mine and I found out that he recently rebuilt the suspension. I need to find out what else has been done before I totally tear it apart. I've been too busy working the last couple of days to give it any attention. I just got a PM from a member with some plastics, so I'm optimistic that this could come together nicely. In addition to the intake boot, I would love to replace the boot that feeds in to the carburetor. It is stiff as steel and it's a real pain to take the carb off or get back on.

I'm making some headway with the old bike. I'm finding that I just don't have the time and money to do as thorough of a fix up as I would like to so I'm mostly doing a clean up and check over. I am finding that overall things are in better shape than I had feared. I am finding the odds and ends that I need on ebay and at my local bike shop. Since both the engine and the suspension have had recent rebuilds, I'm just going to tidy things up a bit and get some riding in. There should be a "Hangover hare scramble" right after New Years and that will have to be my warm up for the AMA National Enduro in Sumter, SC Febuary 3rd. In the meantime, I'll continue collecting various parts and when circumstances either allow or demand such measures, I'll tear in to her again.

Hey David good to you are back in the dirt . I've almost pulled the trigger on a 200 GG myself as I think it would also suite me well. David the CVTR has added lots of single track for you to practice on so get yourself signed up. Congrats on your GG.

i love it, another 200
i love mine, gets me everywhere as with the big guys :-p
proper jetting is a good start, look at the jetting database, so did i , and it was a huge difference!
i just got my suspension sorted out too, (waited far too long to finally put tha cash down :-p )
mine's a 2000 but still going strong.
just ride it and fix what's needed.
you'll drop her anyway and thrash those pretty new plastics ;-)

Thanx guys. John, are you still riding your Husky? John, the trails sound nice. It's a long haul up there for me, but it is a nice club and I like the folks. I'm not sure how much riding my circumstances will allow for, but I'm hoping to do a lot.
