You don't need to touch the water pump to remove the primary cover, just the relative common bolts to the water pump cover. Just drain the coolant. You do need to pull the clutch.

So is it possible to remove the old one and replace it without having to take other things off?

it can be done, but it is difficult to get the new one in square and seated. if it's not square and seated, it will leak.

Brilliant cheers may turn up a little bit of nylon at work to knock it in square..
