What I don't understand is why do you guys ride a sand and mud tyre on rocky terrain. The funny thing is that my buddy's in Germany do the same. I knot that the S12 is a great tyre but not in hard terrain there are better tyres on the market.

A soft terrain tire works better in rocks than a hard terrain tire works in sand or mud. The former is more than acceptable, the latter is always a disaster. Think Moab: brutal rocks, deep soft sand, snot slick clay.

For this I would always use a FIM enduro tyre at front, same profil like a sand and mud tyre but a compound Wichita works on rocks as well.

When I lived in Northeast Tennessee I started using Metzeler MC4s which chunked off exactly like your tires bc there were a lot of rocks. I immediately switched to the intermediate Metzeler MC5s and there wasn't anymore chunking off and wear like your tires in the photos.

I don't know the availability of Pirelli in the US, but these MX tires are much better than the metzeler, even when the are produced in the same factory.

Kind of tangenting a bit here.
Ive tried all of the above tires, and thought that the Pirelli Mid Soft front was the best of that lot. Didn't have much time for any of their rears though. The MidSoft Pirelli is very similar to the Six Days Soft Metzeler front tire. Currently running a M403 Bridgestone on the front, and I think its a phenomenal tire, works well in mud and slick stuff, doesn't chunk in rocks, works in sand. That's paired with a Michelin S12XC on the back, a 130 wide one, has bigger knobs, doesn't chunk, seems to grip well even after rounding off. |

My favorite choice for the rear. Been using it for years . Tried different options but find myself coming back to the MC4's

FYI
Slaven's Racing is having a tire sale now. http://campaign.r20.constantcontact....1-d4ae529a8786 The GNCC Tackee on the rear is a great tire!! I like the outer soft compound they use and very good traction in rocks and tree roots. The downside is that they don't last all that long....
